You are knocked out by illness, chronic pain or have an “accident”! You are just about to make an important presentation or celebrate a long planned anniversary, you’re about about to help your kids move into their first home and your back goes out.

You are about to take the trip of a lifetime and are hit with a tummy bug.

You have a great career opportunity and break or sprain your ankle.

When these things happen we often curse our fate, complain about our luck or grumble about our bodies.

Are we cursed or doomed or dysfunctional in some way? Are we deliberately sabotaging ourselves or is something much deeper and wiser going on?

Those of you who know me, know how passionate I am about teaching your body is not your enemy! But if you don’t understand why these things happen or what messages they have for you, you could easily believe your body IS your enemy.

Time and time again I hear stories of this kind of thing happening and without exception, when I look at the circumstances, I can see the underlying message.

Three friends of mine broke or sprained their ankles when they had either moved to a new school and felt frightened and out of their depth. Or faced a huge change in the direction their lives were taking. I wrote in depth about ankle injuries in my article Why People Break, Sprain and Otherwise Damage Their Ankles.

Lower back pain is another great one! Job insecurity, birthdays, retirement or even children leaving home can trigger this because these occasions confront us with our own mortality. What’s the best thing to do when you are faced with illness, injury or accident at precisely the “wrong” moment?

The first thing to realise is that it struck at exactly the RIGHT moment! It struck to let you know that some part of you is feeling scared, is out of its comfort zone or is being reminded of a previous time it felt that way.

So often when we are making big changes in our lives, our bodies step in to tell us that an unresolved emotional issue has been triggered. Your body is actually doing you a favour! The illness or accident can give you some time to stop and think, to do the emotional work that needs to be done and to allow the rest of you to catch up with the new direction or life challenge you are facing.

How To Speed Up Your Recovery

Why Pain, Illness or Injury Strike at Exactly the "Wrong" Moment! Look after yourself.

Nurture Yourself! Be kind to yourself! The best way to speed up your recovery is to thank your body. Don’t try to fight or resist the pain. Deliberately and consciously go into the pain, let it know you are listening to it and are open to hearing what has come to teach you.

Try to see the bigger picture, yes you may have been inconvenienced by it. But it provides you with a great opportunity to know yourself better, perhaps to rest and reassess your situation and to learn and grow. Your body has great wisdom, it’s much better and less painful to go with it, love and learn from it than to fight and struggle with it.

Talk To Your Pain

Talking to your pain might seem like a strange concept but I am willing to bet that you already do it!

When you become aware of your self-talk you realise that when you are in pain you tend to complain about it, if not to others, certainly to yourself. You may grumble about it, feel resentful and even angry that it prevents you from doing things you want to do.

You judge and criticise yourself and your body. You tell others what a “bad back” or “bad hip” you have and how much you suffer with it.

If you have a name for your pain, a diagnosis, it is worth remembering diagnosis is simply a word. It is just a word used to describe a symptom or symptoms showing up in the body. Diagnosis is only a name, agreed upon to identify specific symptoms.

A diagnosis only has as much power as YOU give it! When you talk about it and identify yourself with it, you give it more power, you give it more energy. When you talk about it, you are affirming you have it!

If you do any of these things, you are already talking to your pain and you are affirming it! The great news is that now that you are aware of this you can change it!

You can change it this very minute by changing the way you talk to the part of your body that is pain. Think of it as a small child, puppy or kitten scared and in pain. Instead of complaining, focus on sending it warm, loving thoughts, if you can (you might not be ready for this step yet) thank it for everything it has done for you and for the message it is sending you. By doing this you change the energy around it instantly.

Knee Pain

Hip Pain

“A few days ago after moving my father in law to a nursing home, we had to clear out his apt. This is the apt I have taken care of him for almost a year. Clearing out his apt was filled with so many emotions. I developed almost debilitating left hip pain while moving his stuff out. Now two days later after cleaning up a day ago, I woke up with pain in the morning but my nightfall tonight, it is almost all gone. I was in so much pain I was crying and could only drag my leg around all yesterday. Even today earlier in the day, there was still intense pain at times. As an herbalist, I began to question if it was not emotional rather than overdoing it when moving the stuff out. I know it is. There was so much fear for the future since he was paying us to take care of him. So we have half the income we had but I know we will make it through, even though it is scary since we are 66 and 70. We had to put him in….we physically could not handle him. It was an abrupt change from 24 hours a day for weeks to none. “For two days over the weekend just gone, I was in agony, I had severe pain in both sides of my neck and at the base of my skull, I thought it was due to a flare up of my fibromyalgia. So I put hot packs on my neck and took the max. dose of painkillers. I began to think I would have to see my chiropractor again!

Anyway like I told you in my last email I’d downloaded your meditations and it was that same night that I was guided to listen to your meditation on Grief & Trauma. I started to play it and as it continued I burst into tears and just kept sobbing….What a release!

I knew I was letting go of the Grief & Trauma that had been building up since my beloved husband passed over two years previous. And the things you mentioned on the meditation I really identified with and I was a little taken aback as I hadn’t realised I was holding onto such beliefs!

And recently I’d left a job where I’d been bullied and was still holding onto a lot of resentment and unforgiveness towards my ex-colleagues and over the last few years many of the jobs I have undertaken, had left me feeling disappointed, hurt and lacking in confidence. So I think some of these emotions were also released!
