Our relationship with food is intimately connected with how emotionally safe, loved and nourished we feel. An increase in appetite may result from emotional pain, the need to fill that painful, empty place with something. The something you are really looking for is love but in a perceived absence of love you make do with food. A lack of appetite can indicate  a desire to retreat from life, nurturing the hurt inside us again indicating a need for love. Not feeling safe can lead you to put on weight and keep it on!

Our relationship with food can be complex. Powerful emotions of enjoyment and guilt get in to the mix. “Expert” advice about what is and is not healthy seems to change daily resulting in confusion and mixed emotions.

The first time I read Louise Hay’s “You Can Heal Your Life” I didn’t like it!

I disliked it intensely and quite vociferously for many years.

How could I dislike something which later became one of the cornerstones of my ownWhat Your Body Wants To Hear” work?  Those of you who have followed my work or heard my interview “Your Body Is Not Your Enemy” on Soul Searching Radio know that I greatly value this hugely famous best seller nowadays. Many of my fellow therapists and friends refer to it as “the bible” and all my healing meditations are based on the theories found in it.

Let me explain my turnaround.

When I first read “You Can Heal Your Life” I was already working as an Emotional Freedom Technique practitioner. That led me to look for and clear the emotional traumas which always underlie a physical or emotional symptom or psychological block.  We worked with the subconscious mind and the energy system to clear these completely and only then introduced positive statements or affirmations.

Many of the people who come to E.F.T. practitioners are already beaten down by feelings of failure. Some have even been abandoned by conventional medicine and come to us a last resort. So when I saw a book which told people to repeat a positive statement over and over and over and expect to get results without first addressing the underlying emotional causes of their problem, I saw it as an opportunity for these vulnerable people to fail yet again. That was why I disliked it!

However, the theory and probable emotional cause of physical symptoms listed in “You Can Heal Your Life” has always been spot on!  I have never had a symptom or known anyone else to have a symptom for which the emotional explanation in that book has been incorrect. Never! Not once!  I even had a friend who worked as a nurse in numerous hospitals who said the same. She’d never come across a patient who, upon getting to know them better, was not exhibiting symptoms which correlated perfectly with their emotional state. Never! Not once!

The main cause of my dislike for this book was the frustration of knowing that if it was combined with E.F.T. tapping or some other Meridian Energy Therapy it would be pure gold. And it is!  I was delighted when Louise discovered and championed E.F.T. She too recognised the amazing healing power of putting her theory and E.F.T together.

My own “What Your Body Wants To Hear” series of healing meditations uses releasing statements, empowering questions then positive affirmations in sequence. Like “You Can Heal Your Life” it  is made even more powerful by tapping along to the audios or scripts.

If you are new to the idea that your emotions create your physical pain it can feel very strange at first.  Many people struggle against the idea that they have created their pain and that they can heal it. It can be a tough and sometimes lonely journey until you find your tribe. In the meantime “You Can Heal Your Life” can bring you a great deal of clarity, hope and support.  It’s still sitting by my side all these years later.

It Takes Courage To Face Your Emotional Issues!

Physical pain often manifests to encourage you to do your emotional work. It takes courage to walk that path but the rewards can be immense. A happy side effect can be partial or total relief from physical pain!

Energy therapists and people who are used to viewing everything from an emotional standpoint can sometimes be guilty of overlooking just how much courage it can take for people who are new to this idea. I have looked at the world this way for so long that it is automatic for me to look for an emotional reason for everything that happens. I am definitely guilty of forgetting how different, strange and potentially scary this might be to others!

We in the West, have been programmed to look outside ourselves for someone, often a medical doctor, to ‘fix’ us.  It must seem very strange indeed to some people when they hear people like me suggesting they look inside themselves for the answers to their problems or pain.  

To make amends for my oversight,  this article is dedicated with love, gratitude and respect to all my wonderful, courageous clients. Thank you for your courage and for sharing your warrior’s journey.

I have gone from dragging myself across the floor every morning in complete agony and dosing myself up on painkillers, to being able to walk completely unaided and pain free and drug free. My family and friends have always known me to have a bad back. The condition has affected me since childhood. But over the last few months it became progressively worse until I was unable to walk unaided. I feel much better tonight mentally as well. A few days ago after moving my father in law to a nursing home, we had to clear out his apt. This is the apt I have taken care of him for almost a year. Clearing out his apt was filled with so many emotions. I developed almost debilitating left hip pain while moving his stuff out. Now two days later after cleaning up a day ago, I woke up with pain in the morning but my nightfall tonight, it is almost all gone. I was in so much pain I was crying and could only drag my leg around all yesterday. Even today earlier in the day, there was still intense pain at times. As an herbalist, I began to question if it was not emotional rather than overdoing it when moving the stuff out. I know it is. There was so much fear for the future since he was paying us to take care of him. So we have half the income we had but I know we will make it through, even though it is scary since we are 66 and 70. We had to put him in….we physically could not handle him. It was an abrupt change from 24 hours a day for weeks to none. Courageous Journeys Through Stomach Pain

Just wanted you to know how the meditation for helping me and my stomach has begun to affect my behaviour. I realise I have a habit of internalising negative emotions and, in the spirit of ‘clearing all ways in which I have stored indigestable emotions’ found myself doing something I have never done before…… I think it’s simply called standing up for yourself!   Yesterday at work I felt I was unfairly treated and found myself nursing the emotional wound all night and even had a dream in which I did indeed stood up for myself. I released a lot of anger.This morning I have emailed my boss to communicate how I felt in a calm reasoned way so hope it does the job! Fingers crossed 🙂Much love M

It was so perfect. One night recently my stomach was upset with anxiety about Pixie, my beloved kitty, who was undergoing surgery, and I listened to Barbara’s stomach mp3. It was so perfect. Rev. Anne Presuel.

It’s great to feel I can have a relationship with my own tummy and, like a mum, comfort it as I would a child. I just wanted to thank you for the Stomach tape. I am finding it so helpful. I have had tummy troubles for couple of years now, following two bereavements and then losing my job!

You may recall I was helped immensely by your guided meditation for releasing grief and trauma so I thought I would continue the healing process by freeing myself from needing the Omezrapole medication which I take for acid reflux.

It is early days yet but I listen to the meditation tape instead of taking the medication and I know my stomach is feeling the benefit of all the loving and liberating thoughts that I am sending it. It’s great to feel I can have a relationship with my own tummy and, like a mum, comfort it as I would a child.

I do continue to take medication if symptoms dictate and am grateful for that but it is wonderfully empowering to begin the self healing process.

“The “attack” if you will subsided and went away certainly as quickly (1/2 a minute) as the cold water. Hi Barbara, I’m a new subscriber 3/4 months, 76 years old, general health good, no medications. My most troubling health issue is skin/dermatology eg Brachioradial and probably Pruritus etc etc from mild to quite bothersome from time to time (every few days I have a good “flair” up). Prior to finding you web site I was treating my various skin conditions with various lotions and for the Brachioradial / on my arms the Best was very cold water for 4/5 minutes, actually brings immediate relief, lasting a few hours. Prior to finding your site I was using a Meditation app from Meditation Oasis and had been using it generally prior to going to bed/sleep a few times a week, I found it pretty good, but had no real long term experience a year or so with meditation. I’m sure I bumped into your site probably Googling around skin problems, issues etc etc etc. Subsequently I purchased your Beyond Affirmations most particularly Soothe Your Skin and also Healing For Your Heart.
I’d like to pass on a couple of my findings, most specifically to the Brachioradial (when it flares up it’s almost an attack) while having an “attack/itchiness/arms for what ever reason I decided instead of the cold water treatment I’d try your app, I actually used the the Relaxation and well being (15.58) introduction Meditation the “attack” if you will subsided and went away certainly as quickly (1/2 a minute) as the cold water. I’ve repeated this 20+ times in the past month eg works every time? Actually I find it more convenient than the long Soothe Your Skin, whatever works.
I wanted to pass this along because this Brachioradial can be a real problem for many seniors and there is very, very little the dermatologist really know about it or more importantly how to treat it (mine for certain is a pinched nerve in my cervical 5/6 disc). Anyway please pass along if anyone asks, one thing for certain trying what I did certainly can’t cause “any” harm. Mr G.K.

A lot of the pain in my neck and at the base of my skull had GONE! And that night I slept soundly which was wonderful as the previous two nights I’d hardly slept due to the agonising pain. For two days over the weekend just gone, I was in agony, I had severe pain in both sides of my neck and at the base of my skull, I thought it was due to a flare up of my fibromyalgia. So I put hot packs on my neck and took the max. dose of painkillers. I began to think I would have to see my chiropractor again!

Anyway like I told you in my last email I’d downloaded your meditations and it was that same night that I was guided to listen to your meditation on Grief & Trauma. I started to play it and as it continued I burst into tears and just kept sobbing….What a release!

I knew I was letting go of the Grief & Trauma that had been building up since my beloved husband passed over two years previous. And the things you mentioned on the meditation I really identified with and I was a little taken aback as I hadn’t realised I was holding onto such beliefs! A lot of the pain in my neck and at the base of my skull had GONE! And that night I slept soundly which was wonderful as the previous two nights I’d hardly slept due to the agonising pain. For two days over the weekend just gone, I was in agony, I had severe pain in both sides of my neck and at the base of my skull, I thought it was due to a flare up of my fibromyalgia. So I put hot packs on my neck and took the max. dose of painkillers. I began to think I would have to see my chiropractor again!

Anyway like I told you in my last email I’d downloaded your meditations and it was that same night that I was guided to listen to your meditation on Grief & Trauma. I started to play it and as it continued I burst into tears and just kept sobbing….What a release!

I knew I was letting go of the Grief & Trauma that had been building up since my beloved husband passed over two years previous. And the things you mentioned on the meditation I really identified with and I was a little taken aback as I hadn’t realised I was holding onto such beliefs!
