I’ve written a lot about weight loss because it’s a very misunderstood area.  For some reason, many of us who are well versed in energy work, universal laws, law of attraction and such, don’t realise that the same laws apply to weight and body image issues – they do!

As I wrote in my Make Friends With Food article, everything we’ve learned in personal or spiritual development studies can be applied to weight and body image issues.

We have a relationship with food, just as we have a relationship with everything and everyone else in our lives. If we create conflict and struggle in that relationship with negative beliefs, worries and traumas, we simply create more failure, resistance and struggle.

I covered a lot of the reasons for stubborn weight issues in my article What Was Going On In Your Life The Last Time You Were at Your Ideal Weight? some of which apply to empaths. But as empaths we have some extra struggles too!

In my E-book, Healing the Heart of the Empath, I describe how so many of us have spent our lives being told we are “too” something. “Too sensitive, too emotional, too serious, too passionate, too opinionated too ….Fill in the blank, it’s been endless.” Many of us also struggle to know where our energy and emotions end and other people’s begin and this can contribute to over-eating and failure to lose weight.

As with everything our bodies do, there are deeper, eminently sensible and logical reasons for it but until we understand those reasons, it can be hard to know where to turn when we keep failing to lose or maintain weight.

But even when we have healed the emotional roots, our bodies take a bit of time to catch up. Your body may still be holding on to excess weight in an effort to slow your energy down and stop being “too much” for people. The comfort aspect of over-eating may feel good in the moment but after a few minutes you feel that heavy feeling which is a great way of slowing your energy down!

Look at where you still believe you are “too much” for others and see if your over-eating is related to that belief.

The second reason an empath may struggle with weight issues, is a lack of emotional grounding. If you are going into the emotional fray every day without consciously grounding yourself, your body may have decided it has to ground you!  If you are giving too much of yourself in a healing capacity, over-eating dulls your senses and your sensitivity giving you a much needed emotional break.  (Once again, I marvel at the wisdom of our bodies and how they really are always trying to do the very best they can to support us!)

Consciously and deliberately find another way to ground yourself and your body will move towards it’s natural balance again.

I just wasn’t hungry any longer. I had used your Food meditation the other night for the first time (I always feel guilty about food choices even if all I’ve had is a bagel lol and I find it difficult to know when I’m full, etc.) Well this morning I laid out my breakfast and was happily eating it and then with about 3/4 of it done, I suddenly decided I didn’t want anymore, I just wasn’t hungry any longer. This might seem very normal for most people but that doesn’t happen to me. lol So I was very surprised and pleased! lol

If you have symptoms of illness, pain or discomfort, use those in your set up statement as you tap on your Side of Hand Point. For example, “Even though I have this cold, I deeply and completely love, accept and forgive myself”. Repeat this three times then tap the Eyebrow Point gently, around ten times, saying “I have this cold”. Move to the Side Of Eye point and repeat, “I have this cold”. When I first started as an Emotional Freedom Technique Practitioner I specialised in weight issues, both on a one to one basis and running groups.

I have written before about some of the fascinating reasons people don’t lose weight until their emotional issues are discovered and dealt with. What Was Going On In Your Life The Last Time You Were at Your Ideal Weight?

Today I want to write about the unseen dynamics that go on around social eating. Eating together is one of the most enjoyable, bonding, sharing experiences we can have but if you have emotional issues around over-eating, it can be very challenging.

If you approach social eating without having addressed your underlying emotional issues, you are going to struggle – to say the least.

One mother of two young children I spoke with (but didn’t work with!) explained that she had signed up for a very expensive meal delivery service. This service sent her calorie controlled meals every day. She didn’t have to think about what to buy or cook and she didn’t have to count the calories, so far so good. However, in order to resist the temptation of picking from her kid’s plates, she ate alone in the kitchen while her family ate together at the dining table. In order to resist temptation, she completely isolated herself and missed precious family time with her husband and children. Going out for a romantic dinner with her husband was out of the question as was having a girls night out with her friends.

I think you can see where this is going and can probably guess how long that kind of self-denial would last.

Having spent a lot of money on this ‘weight loss’ system and using will-power alone, she was pretty miserable. There was absolutely nothing positive to aim for and her unresolved, subconscious emotional drivers would probably ensure she wasn’t going to be able to sustain this lonely regime for very long.

On the completely opposite end of the spectrum, I worked with a lady who’s results astounded me.

We worked one to one, addressing the roots of her emotional eating with E.F.T. and she confided in me that she was worried that changing her outlook and attitude towards food might ruin a special friendship she had. She and a girlfriend had a regular girls night date where they ordered Chinese food, chatted and laughed and really enjoyed themselves. After dinner, her friend’s daughter would bring home snacks which they would all enjoy together. These evenings were really special to her and she didn’t want to lose them.

To be completely honest, at the time I didn’t know how the work we did together would affect these special evenings. I was thrilled and amazed when she told me what had happened the first ‘girls night’ after our sessions.

The evening started out as normal, chatting, laughing and having a good time. Controlling how much she ate wasn’t even on her mind, she was up for a good, fun night. What she hadn’t explained to me before, was that they always went back for second helpings and ate the food until it was gone! After that, they’d get stuck into the snacks the friend’s daughter brought over.

On this night, however, she didn’t go back for second helpings nor was she drawn to eat any of the snacks, she just felt happily full. She wasn’t using will-power, she hadn’t even consciously thought of how much she was or was not eating, she just felt full. This I would have expected, but I didn’t expect the next part! Her friend (who didn’t even know about our E.F.T. sessions and certainly hadn’t done any!) didn’t go back for second helpings either, nor did she eat as many of the snacks her daughter brought over.

By changing her inner-world, energy and attitude and without saying a word, my client’s inner changes changed the dynamics of the evening.

Whatever emotional drivers and dynamics had been at play had changed and this change affected everyone. It didn’t happen on a conscious level but on the much more powerful energetic level and best of all, none of it involved self-denial, self-discipline or will-power!

This really goes to the root of this work, we don’t want to be miserable, micro manage ourselves, struggle with will-power and expensive weight loss solutions. We want to effect change on a deep, subconscious level, by healing the emotional drivers behind the behaviour. We want this to be easy, natural and organic and most importantly we still want to be able to enjoy spending time with our loved ones, eating together and having fun!

I’ve written a lot about weight loss recently because I think it’s a very misunderstood area.  For some reason many of us who are well versed in energy work, universal laws, law of attraction etc. don’t realise that the same laws apply to weight and body image issues – they do!
 

Before I moved into Energy Therapies, I trained in Dog Behaviour. We used kind, effective, reward based training never allowing the dog to fail and very rarely, if ever, using the word “no”.

The trick was to take the dog’s mind where you wanted the body to go, quietly, gently and without force. For example, to teach the dog to sit you hold a treat in front of and just above the dog’s face. If you have their attention and position the treat correctly, their bottom will eventually lower to the floor – success! Most importantly, you have not used force, you have not created an unpleasant experience nor have you created resistance or conflict – even bigger success!!

The very same can be said about successful weight loss. If you get your mind, in our case, the subconscious mind, to go where you want your body to go, without using force (will-power) or creating resistance or conflict, you are on your way to success.

Unlike dogs, most of us already have conflict and resistance in our minds, so first it is essential to clear out all the old emotional debris and this is where energy therapies and affirmations come into their own.

One lady wrote to me recently after having used our Heal Your Relationship With Food meditation once:-
